WHY CHOOSE NCEPU

 

Who Is NCEPU

 

North China Electric Power (hereafter abbreviated as NCEPU) was founded in 1958 with its first name as Beijing Electric Power College, located in Beijing. In 1969, Beijing Electric Power College was moved to Hebei Province and later renamed as North China Institute of Electric Power. It was recognized as one key national university by State Council in 1978. In May, 1995, under the approval of the former State Education Commission, North China Institute of Electric Power and Beijing Power Engineering and Economics Institute were merged to form North China Electric Power University. Now NCEPU is a key national university under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Education of PRC. It has been ranked as one of “211 Project” Universities in China, referring to Top 100 Chinese universities in 21 century. The NCEPU Board of Trustees was formed years ago with the seven largest corporations in the electric power sector in China as its members. The headquarters of NCEPU is located in Beijing with its subordinate campus in Baoding City, a neighboring city of Beijing, in Hebei Province.

 

Academic Reputation

 

As its name may indicate, the university firstly captures people’s attention through its unique disciplinary characteristics. It is true that NCEPU keeps the leading position in the power and energy-relevant disciplines such as electric power engineering and automation, energy and thermal power engineering, renewable energy etc. among which three disciplines, namely, Electric Power Engineering and Automation, Thermal Power Engineering, and Management Science have been accredited as Key National Discipline, the top grade of a discipline in China’s higher education. The evaluation is absolutely authoritative due to the joint involvement of Ministry of Education, some scientific research institutions and other government administrations.

 

But, over 50 years, not just confined to the development of a narrow spectrum of disciplines related to electric power, NCEPU has developed a comprehensive and extensive package of disciplines incorporating engineering, science, arts, economics, management, and law.

 

Under the disciplinary system, 54 undergraduate programs, 52 postgraduate programs, 20 doctoral programs, and 4 dual degree programs are provided by 10 academic schools of the university. In addition, four postdoctoral workstations have been entitled by the government to attract high-caliber post doctoral candidates to conduct cutting-edge research. MBA Center is another independent academic unit to serve the professional managers. To fulfill the teaching and research tasks, NCEPU is equipped with capable teaching and administrative staff, with a total number of more than 2800. Among the staff, four hold the title of Academician of Chinese Engineering Academy, 256 the title of professors, and 407 the title of associate professors.

 

From the establishment, North China Electric Power University has been orienting its academic tradition to the service for the community. In the last, we have cultivated a population of up to 80,000 graduates, a remarkable contribution to the community. Some of the alumni have been the backbones of enterprises in the power sector and other industries.

 

Outstanding Research

 

Right now the university operates 2 national laboratories, 2 key MOE laboratories, 7 key provincial and ministerial laboratories and a Beijing municipal energy development research center. Based on the advanced facilities, since 2000, NCEPU has been successfully bidding for and undertaking 542 specific research projects supported by national scientific research programs such as National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program), National Basic Research Program (973 Program), and Natural Science Foundation Program of China. The NCEPU academic staff have won over 60 prizes of National, Provincial or Ministerial Scientific and Technological Progress Award, and has been approved more than 40 patents. In 2008, its scientific research fund has exceeded 310 million Yuan (an equivalent to over 45 million U.S dollars).

Some technological achievements have been applied to the production. NCEPU High-Tech Park has been authorized as Beijing High-Tech Park, leaving NCEPU more opportunities to work with and serve high-tech industries and more enterprises. 

 

Exciting Campus Life

 

NCEPU is more than a place of learning. NCEPU students enjoy a diversity of sporting and cultural activities, and relax in an exciting and welcoming environment. There are more than 100 associations and clubs. Cultural activities including concerts, art performances, dance parties and movies are held regularly, and sport events such as NCEPU Sport Festival, NCEPU Football League, NCEPU Basketball Tournament, and NCEPU Volleyball Match are held each year regardless of the sport events held by schools.

Upholding the philosophy of Be a Responsible University, NCEPU has been engaged in presenting students most considerate and satisfying services, making NCEPU a comfortable home of more than 28,000 students. The high level of students’ satisfaction with the academic, recreational, and logistic facilities illustrates that students have been and will be taken good care of on NCEPU campuses on a solid material basis. 

 

l         Library: The NCEPU Library contains a book and periodical collection of over 1.5 million volumes, hundreds of reader places, and computers for use by readers. These computers offer access to the Internet, email, a wide range of software packages, video materials, and e-books. There is campus online access to a range of electronic databases, abstracts and indexes. The library staff offer training to the freshmen and help you to make the best use of library collections, resources and support services such as networked databases, online searching ad Internet access.

 

l         Computer, Network and Information: The NCEPU Network and Information Center provides extensive computing and internet services for undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as staff members. Several subordinate computer rooms are available on campuses and internet is available at any corner on the campuses via an extensive communications network.

 

l         Sporting and Recreational Facilities: The NCEPU Sporting and Exercise Department provides a variety of professional instructions for students to participate in physical activities so as to achieve a healthier lifestyle and develop skills of maintaining a strong body. NCEPU offers a wide range of sporting and recreational facilities, including an international-standard athletics stadium, 2 outdoor tennis courts, 2 outdoor basketball courts, 1 indoor basketball court, 1 outdoor table tennis court, outdoor fitness facilities and two recreational performance theatres.

 

l         Healthcare: The NCEPU Hospital provides professional medical examination and consultation for some normal diseases.

 

l         Logistical Services: The NCEPU Logistic Service Group offers students comprehensive services including food, campus shopping, and campus bookshops. On NCEPU campuses there are 10 canteens, 6 restaurants, 4 shopping centers and two bookshops.

 

l         Banking and Post Office: Students can have access to several ATMs on each campus, and set up bank notes and deal with mailing issues through the campus post office.

The EEES was established in 1958 originally as the Department of Electric Engineering, and three years later, three academic programs from Harbin Institute of Technology were merged into the department. Experiencing the merging, adjustment, moving and the development, the department finally grew into the EEES in July 2006, with its headquarters in Beijing while the Department of Electric Engineering and the Department of Electronic and Communication Engineering on Baoding Campus. Now EEES claims to be the largest electrical and electronic engineering school across the world in terms of student population, teaching staff and building space.

 

Right now over  The total number of faculty and staff members is 296; among them, one Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, one Lecture Professor of Chang Jiang Scholars Program, 62 professors, and 81 associate professors with professional ethic and high-level teaching and research. In addition to general laboratories for instructions use, the EEES runs MOE Laboratory of Power System Protection & Dynamic Security Monitoring, Beijing Municipal Laboratory of High Voltage & Electromagnetic Compatibility, and Electrical & Electronic Experimental Instruction Center. Over the past years, the EEES has established 11 institutes: Electric Power System Institute, High Voltage & Electromagnetic Compatibility Institute, Transmission & Distribution System Institute, Flexible Electric Power Technology Institute, Operation Control of Electric Machine & Energy Saving Technology Institute, Power Relay Protection Institute, Electric Power Market Institute, Communication Technology Institute, Electronic Information Technology Institute, Modern Electronic Technology Institute, and Electrical & Electronic Education Center.

International Education Institute (IEI)

 

At the turn of new century, NCEPU formulated the new development strategy with the purpose of making NCEPU into a first-class higher education provider domestically, an academically influential higher education institution internationally, and a multi-disciplinary, research- oriented and internationalized university. As one important component of NCEPU’s Strategy, the main concern of its internationalization is to introduce an advanced philosophy of running a university, outstanding teaching and learning system, up-to-date teaching and learning materials, and thus to upgrade her operational capacity and academic reputation, thus cultivating the first-class talents.

 

To implement the internationalization strategy, International Education Institute (IEI) was established in 2001 to develop international collaboration. The main function of IEI is to admit international students, provide the Chinese language and the English language learning services, and collaborate with UK, American, Canadian, French, and Australian partner universities in joint undergraduate programs and credit transfer programs, under which NCEPU students will study both in NCEPU and corresponding partner universities abroad. Up to now, we have enrolled nearly 500 international students studying for the Chinese language, the English language and academic programs on part-time and full-time basis. In the last years, we have developed one joint undergraduate program of Electrical Engineering program with University of Manchester and University of Strathclyde in UK, an articulation program of Electrical Engineering with University of Bath, Cardiff University in UK and Purdue University (Calumet) in the U.S., an articulation program of Accounting, Finance with University of Queensland in Australia, an articulation program of Nuclear Engineering and Technology with INP in France.

 

IEI has now been a home for both international students who are going study degree programs, the Chinese language, and the Chinese students who are going to study abroad. With well-equipped and satisfying learning environment, comfortable living conditions, every student in IEI will certainly enjoy their study and life here.
